Our Story

(mad’ouk): toughened by life, alludes to a person who has had a round of life experience and is qualified for any task they set their mind to.

The meaning behind madouk is the essence of this brand and the driving force behind co-founders, Jess and Tay. After graduating college and living in Thailand for 2 years, their paths brought them to Morocco where they worked for a travel and wellness company based in the coastal town of Essaouira.

The story behind Madouk is different.

Most import brands began with just importing products...

Local artisans are being bought out for pennies and then having their products turned around and marked up over 500% - all taking place down the street from their workshops.

The answer is always the same, “this is the way things are.”

"After living in Thailand for 2 years, we moved to Morocco to start a travel and wellness company. We spent a year working and living in Essaouira where we built relationships and quickly became aware of the disperity between the bazaarists selling and the artisans creating. "

So we became close with the locals, and they became our family.  An organic connection with the people led to a deeper appreciation of their work and an alarming understanding of the system that extorted their skills for almost nothing.

And it was happening everywhere,

all around us.

After a breaking point with our career - the next move was more apparent than ever…

We started a business that helps preserve ancient sustainable techniques and skills threatened by extortion and a highly mechanized market.

It’s rare nowadays that a human can distinguish between a mechanized creation and a handmade good.

As a culturally collective company, we help maintain these values within the cultures.

With every purchase, every customer who sees our brand knows that their reach in purchasing just a material object goes far beyond just owning a piece of the culture and owning the essence in their home.
