Apply enough sunscreen to cover all exposed skin. A good rule of thumb is a teaspoon for the face, and 1 ounce to the body (tip: 1 ounce is roughly the size of a shot glass).
Don't forget to apply to commonly overlooked areas including the tops of feet, neck, the back of the neck, ears, the backs of the knees, and the top of the head.
Sunscreen takes approximately 15 minutes to absorb into skin and provide effective defense, which is why you should apply 15 minutes before sun exposure.
When outdoors, reapply sunscreen approximately every two hours, or after swimming or sweating. You can always check the directions on the bottle for clear usage directions.
Lips need protection, too! Try a lip balm or lipstick that contains sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
The two sunscreens feature different key ingredients to help prevent further sun damage, and other environmental factors.
Sunlight consists of two types of harmful rays that reach the earth — UVA rays and UVB rays.
UVA rays (think “A” for aging rays) can prematurely age your skin, causing wrinkles and age spots. UVA rays are so powerful, they can pass through window glass. UVA rays are approximately the same strength from sun up to sun down, and approximately the same strength year-round.
UVB rays (think “B” for burning rays) are the primary cause of sunburn. For the most part, UVB rays cannot penetrate window glass. UVB rays are strongest from 10 AM to 4 pm, and are stronger during spring and summer months.
While UVA and UVB rays are different, overexposure to either can lead to skin cancer.
The United States Department of Health & Human Services, and the World Health Organization’s International Agency of Research on Cancer, have declared UV radiation from the sun and artificial sources (such as tanning beds and sun lamps) as a known carcinogen (cancer-causing substance).
Skincare
First thing to know is the difference: dry skin is a lack of oil, whereas dehydrated skin is a lack of water. This is the reason why oily skin types can be dehydrated.
Dry or dehydrated skin can both feel tight and appear flaky or rough, with fine lines, and pronounced wrinkles. However, dry or dehydrated skin is not always visible. Even without visible dry patches, your skin could be dry or dehydrated underneath and in need of additional hydration.
YES! The sun emits harmful rays year-round, and are so strong they can penetrate through clouds and damage your skin. Did you know that snow, sand, and water act as reflective surfaces for the sun, meaning sun isn’t just striking your skin from above, but also striking it from below? This is another reason why sunscreen usage should not be limited to summer days (or summer activities), and should be worn every day.
Sunscreen use should be avoided on babies younger than 6 months. In general, babies should avoid any sun exposure during the first 6 months. If the sun can’t be avoided, use long-sleeve clothing, pants, and hats to keep the baby protected.
Once your baby has passed the age of 6 months, a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher can be applied to exposed skin that is not covered by protective clothing. Always refer to, and follow, the instructions on product label. When outdoors, sunscreen should be reapplied to baby’s exposed skin approximately every two hours, or as often as the label indicates.
There is no safe way to tan, and no such thing as a safe tan. Every time you tan, you damage your skin. As this damage builds, you speed up the aging of your skin which begins to show as fine lines, loss of elasticity, loss of firmness, sagging, and dark spots. Every time you tan, you’re increasing your risk for skin cancer.
There are many safe alternatives to creating a tan look, including spray tans, and at-home tanning lotions and balms that have come a long way
